Formula One team McLaren has secured a long-term commitment from driver Oscar Piastri with a multiyear contract extension. This announcement was made just ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, where Piastri, who is 23 years old, will be racing in front of his home crowd.
The news came on Wednesday and follows similar contract extensions for key figures in the team, including chief executive Zak Brown, team principal Andrea Stella, and Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris. Norris had signed his extension back in January 2024.
Piastri had already been under contract with McLaren until the end of 2026, but the details of his new deal, which extends beyond that, have not been revealed. Last season, he celebrated victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan, contributing to McLaren’s first constructors’ championship since 1998. He made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 2023.
Brown praised Piastri, highlighting not only his talent but also his strong work ethic and fit within the team culture. He stated that Piastri has been a significant asset both on and off the track. Brown expressed excitement about the future, emphasizing the team’s goal to compete for world championships together.
Piastri, who will turn 24 next month, expressed his enthusiasm about being part of McLaren’s future. He reflected on the support the team has given him since he joined in 2022 and how much he has enjoyed the journey back to the top of the sport. He acknowledged the talented people at McLaren who have helped him succeed early in his career and expressed pride in continuing to represent the team.
As the season opener approaches, with practice starting on Friday, Piastri is eager to fight for the title this year, marking an exciting chapter for both him and McLaren.
