Netanyahu to Meet with Trump for Talks in Washington, DC

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Washington, DC, for important discussions with US President Donald Trump. The meeting will cover various topics, including tariffs, Iran, and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Netanyahu’s office confirmed the trip, highlighting the focus on Israel’s relationship with Turkey, the threat from Iran, and efforts to combat the International Criminal Court.

The talks are scheduled to take place at the White House on Monday, following a phone call between Trump and Netanyahu last Thursday. During the call, Netanyahu raised concerns about tariffs, specifically the 17-percent tariff that Israel currently faces under Trump’s "reciprocal tariffs." In response, Israel has taken steps to eliminate remaining tariffs on US imports. The two nations enjoy a free trade agreement that allows around 98 percent of US goods to enter Israel without taxes.

Netanyahu is currently in Hungary, marking his first trip to Europe since 2023. This visit comes despite an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court related to alleged war crimes in Gaza. Hungary recently announced its withdrawal from the ICC, which is notable since the United States is not a member of the court.

The agenda for the Washington meeting also includes discussions about a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of Israeli captives held by Palestinian groups. Israel has renewed its military actions in Gaza, breaking a temporary truce with Hamas.

Additionally, Trump has been pushing Iran to engage in discussions regarding its nuclear program. While Iran has expressed willingness for indirect talks, the US and its allies have long accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies, asserting that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes.

This meeting comes at a critical time, with tensions high in the region and significant issues on the table that could impact both Israeli and US interests.
