A tragic incident unfolded in Santa Ana, California, where a mother has been charged with the murder of her 11-year-old son. Saritha Ramaraju, 48, is accused of killing her son by slitting his throat with a kitchen knife inside a hotel room at a La Quinta Inn. This shocking event occurred after the pair spent three days enjoying Disneyland together, a trip meant to strengthen their bond following Ramaraju’s move out of state after a divorce in 2018.
On Wednesday morning, police discovered the boy’s body in the hotel room, surrounded by souvenirs from their Disneyland visit. Ramaraju reportedly called the police around 9:12 a.m., claiming she had harmed her son and had taken pills in an attempt to end her life. When authorities arrived, they found the boy deceased and Ramaraju was taken to a hospital for treatment before being arrested.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced the charges against Ramaraju on Friday, which include one felony count of murder and an enhancement for personal use of a weapon. If convicted, she could face a sentence ranging from 26 years to life in prison. During her arraignment, Ramaraju did not enter a plea and is currently being held without bail. She is scheduled to return to court on April 17.
Spitzer expressed his heartbreak over the case, emphasizing that a child’s safety should always be in their parent’s care. Instead of nurturing her son, Ramaraju’s actions led to a devastating loss. The boy was supposed to reunite with his father later that day, highlighting the tragic irony of the situation.
This incident raises serious concerns about the well-being of children caught in difficult family dynamics. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of such a senseless act, as many question how a trip meant for joy could end in such sorrow.
