Moscow and Surrounding Areas Targeted in Significant Drone Attack, According to Russian Officials

A significant drone attack struck Moscow and its surrounding region overnight, resulting in at least one death and injuries to three others. Local authorities reported that the assault targeted areas just outside the capital, particularly the towns of Vidnoye and Domodedovo.

Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyev confirmed that the attack caused damage to seven apartments in a residential building. In response to the threat, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that 73 drones were intercepted as they approached the city, with debris from one drone damaging a building’s roof.

The aftermath of the attack led to disruptions in public transport, including the suspension of one district train service. Additionally, flight restrictions were put in place at major airports in Moscow, including Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo, which serve millions of travelers each year. This incident marks one of the largest drone assaults since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

The timing of the attack is notable, occurring just hours before a crucial meeting between U.S. and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia aimed at discussing ways to end the ongoing conflict. In a social media post, Governor Vorobyev shared images of the damage, which included burnt vehicles in a nearby parking area. He also mentioned that 12 residents, including three children, were evacuated from their damaged homes.

The Russian defense ministry later claimed that a total of 337 Ukrainian drones were either intercepted or destroyed in this operation across Moscow and nine other regions. As of now, Ukraine has not provided any comments regarding the attack. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drone strikes targeted Kyiv and other regions overnight, though details about casualties from those attacks remain unclear.
