A driver for the Moorpark Unified School District was arrested on Wednesday morning while picking up students, raising serious concerns about safety. The incident unfolded when a parent noticed the driver, identified as 39-year-old Jason Watson, smelling of alcohol. Alarmed, the parent promptly alerted the school district.
Upon receiving the report, the district’s transportation dispatch instructed Watson to pull over and stop the van immediately. The Moorpark Police Department was then notified and arrived at the scene. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the police conducted a field sobriety test, including a breathalyzer, but the results were not disclosed.
Fortunately, the students who were on board the van were safely transferred to a backup vehicle and arrived at school on time. The parents were informed of the situation shortly after the police concluded their investigation. Superintendent Kelli Hays praised the parent for their vigilance and commended the police for their prompt response.
Hays emphasized that the safety of students and staff is a top priority for the district. She mentioned that the transportation department has a strong safety record and requires all drivers to undergo extensive background checks and training. Additionally, drivers are subject to strict federal drug and alcohol regulations, including random testing throughout the year.
Watson has since been booked at the Ventura County Jail, and the district is likely to review its policies and procedures in light of this incident to ensure the safety of its students continues to be upheld.
