Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his attendance at the upcoming G7 leaders’ summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, later this month. He expressed gratitude to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for the invitation.
Modi has participated in four G7 summits in person since 2019, and he attended another one virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a message posted on X, he shared his appreciation for Carney’s call and congratulated him on his recent election victory.
However, Modi’s visit comes at a time when diplomatic relations between Canada and India are strained. This tension arises from ongoing investigations into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader, in British Columbia. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has alleged that agents of the Indian government were involved in Nijjar’s death.
During a press conference, Carney was asked whether he believed Modi had any involvement in the killing. He refrained from giving a direct answer, emphasizing the importance of the ongoing legal process in Canada. Carney stated that it is inappropriate to comment on matters currently under investigation.
When pressed further, Carney reiterated his respect for the legal process, stating that it would be irresponsible for someone in his position to interfere with it. He also addressed concerns from Canadians about Modi’s invitation, asserting that Canada is a nation governed by the rule of law. He reassured that the legal proceedings regarding Nijjar’s case are proceeding as they should.
The backdrop of this summit is significant, as it comes after a parliamentary committee in Canada called for an emergency meeting over allegations of Indian interference in Canadian affairs. This followed the expulsion of six Indian diplomats linked to a campaign against Canadian citizens.
Despite these challenges, Carney explained that Modi’s participation is essential for discussions on energy security and infrastructure development, which are vital topics for the G7 summit.
As tensions rise, members of the Indian diaspora in Canada are on edge, worried about potential repercussions for travel and safety. India has denied any involvement in Nijjar’s killing and accused Trudeau of playing politics with the issue.
