Minnesota Lawmaker Fatally Shot, Another Wounded in Targeted Attack

A serious incident unfolded in Minnesota involving a suspect posing as a police officer. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley reported that the suspect used a fake police badge and uniform to gain entry into the homes of lawmakers. He was also seen driving a car that resembled a police vehicle, complete with emergency lights.

The situation escalated early Saturday morning. Officers received a call around 2:00 AM about an incident involving a lawmaker, identified as Hortman, and his wife. A follow-up call came in at 3:35 AM, prompting police to check on Hortman’s safety. When officers arrived at Hortman’s home, they exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who managed to escape.

Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt, with the FBI and hundreds of police officers involved. They have taken the suspect’s vehicle but believe he is now on foot. The Champlin Police confirmed that the suspect remains at large, but there is currently no ongoing threat to the public.

In response to the incident, police are advising residents to be cautious. They recommend not answering the door for a police officer unless there are two officers present. Additionally, the Brooklyn Park Police Department has issued a shelter-in-place order for a three-mile radius around Edinburgh Golf Course.

Bob Jacobson, Minnesota’s commissioner of public safety, condemned the attack, describing it as a violent act against public servants. He noted that the suspect exploited the trust associated with police uniforms, which is particularly disturbing for those in law enforcement.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his grief over the loss of a respected leader. He called Hortman a dedicated public servant and emphasized that violence is not the answer to disagreements. In light of the incident, he activated the State Emergency Operations Center to manage the ongoing situation and ensure the safety of elected officials and others who may be at risk.

Local officials, including Mounds View Mayor Zach Lindstrom, have received safety alerts in light of the events. The community is on high alert, but authorities have reassured the public that they are working diligently to address the situation.
