Astronaut Sophie Adenot is set to enjoy some exquisite French cuisine in space. She will be dining on gourmet dishes designed by renowned chef Anne-Sophie Pic during her upcoming mission to the International Space Station (ISS) next year.
Adenot, who is 42 years old, has collaborated with Pic to create a special menu that breaks away from the usual freeze-dried meals astronauts typically eat. Instead of standard space fare, she will have the chance to savor items like "Foie gras cream on toasted brioche" and "Lobster bisque with crab and caraway." The European Space Agency (ESA) has described this culinary venture as "a pinch of France in space."
The menu consists of four starters, two main courses, and two desserts. Alongside the luxurious foie gras and lobster bisque, there will also be dishes like braised beef and chocolate cream. Adenot expressed that these meals will not only please her taste buds but also help her feel connected to her roots and her home country of France.
Pic, who holds the record for the most Michelin stars awarded to a female chef, is excited about this project. She noted that creating meals for space is a unique challenge, as the food must meet strict guidelines. It must be lightweight, free of crumbs, and have a shelf life of at least 24 months. Most space meals are canned, vacuum-packed, or freeze-dried, with fresh produce being a rare treat.
This initiative is part of a tradition where astronauts receive special "bonus meals" prepared in collaboration with chefs. These meals are designed to boost morale and foster camaraderie among the crew. Adenot plans to share these gourmet dishes with her fellow astronauts, marking a significant moment for French culinary culture as it ventures into space for the first time.
Adenot’s background as a former helicopter test and rescue pilot has earned her several accolades, including recognition for her efforts in promoting gender equality in science. As she prepares for her mission, she looks forward to enjoying and sharing the extraordinary tastes of French cuisine in the unique setting of the ISS.
