A tragic incident unfolded in Beverly Grove when a man fatally shot his older brother after witnessing him choke their 80-year-old mother. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene on North Alfred Street around 1:25 p.m. on Friday.
The conflict began when the 61-year-old brother allegedly used a baseball bat to break windows and damage property in their mother’s home. He then threatened her, prompting the mother to call for help. Her 57-year-old son arrived to find his mother being choked.
In an attempt to intervene, the younger son fired a warning shot with a shotgun, but the choking continued. Believing his mother’s life was in danger, he shot his brother.
LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman stated that the shooting is being classified as a "justifiable homicide," meaning the younger son will not face charges. The names of both brothers have not been released. The mother suffered head injuries that required stitches.
Detective Samuel Marullo emphasized that the younger brother acted to save his mother, stating, "He had no choice, but to kill his own brother." The incident underscores the extreme and tragic circumstances that can arise in family disputes.
