LAPD Sergeant Among Two Fatalities in 405 Freeway Crash That Closed Southbound Lanes

A tragic incident occurred early Monday on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles, claiming the life of LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng. The 26-year veteran of the department was helping at the scene of a two-car crash when he was struck by oncoming traffic.

The accident happened just after 2 a.m. near Moraga Drive. Sergeant Deng had stopped to assist the motorists involved in the initial crash. Unfortunately, as he exited his vehicle to offer help, he was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “He died a hero. He was out there caring for others, putting their safety before his own.” Chief McDonnell highlighted that Sergeant Deng had dedicated much of his career to the Mental Evaluation Unit, where he worked to support officers during crisis situations.

In the initial crash that prompted Deng’s response, one other person lost their life, though their identity has not been released. The California Highway Patrol’s Assistant Chief Joe Zizi noted that the investigation into the series of events was ongoing.

Mayor Karen Bass also spoke at a news conference, emphasizing the significance of Sergeant Deng’s sacrifice. “This is a sad day for our city. The sergeant was an example of somebody who lost his life attempting to save others,” she said.

As a result of the incident, all southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway were closed for nearly 10 hours while authorities conducted their investigation. Traffic was finally reopened just before 12:30 p.m.

Sergeant Deng’s commitment to serving the community and his willingness to help others in need will be remembered as a true reflection of his character.
