LAPD Chief Justifies Police Strategies During Protests: Prompt and Thoughtful Response

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell recently defended the LAPD’s response to protests against President Trump’s immigration policies. He stated that officers acted appropriately in managing the unrest, despite facing criticism for their aggressive crowd control tactics.

In a statement released on Monday, McDonnell announced that the department would review each incident involving the use of force. He emphasized that the LAPD would accept scrutiny and take action against any officer who did not meet the department’s standards.

The chief’s comments came in response to a recent article that highlighted accounts from protesters who were injured by officers using hard foam projectiles and other less-lethal munitions. Footage from the protests showed police on horseback trampling individuals and using batons, raising concerns about their methods.

McDonnell acknowledged the serious accusations made against the department and insisted that the narrative surrounding the protests often overlooks the violent conditions officers faced. While he recognized that many demonstrations were peaceful, he noted that some were marred by violence and vandalism. He argued that when demonstrators began throwing objects and refusing to disperse after being ordered to do so, police were justified in taking swift action to protect public safety.

The chief reported that 52 officers sustained injuries requiring medical attention during the protests, claiming many were attacked with bottles, bricks, and even fireworks. He criticized those who used edited videos and anecdotal evidence to support claims of police misconduct.

McDonnell denied allegations that officers failed to issue dispersal orders before using force. He stated that warnings were given in both English and Spanish through amplified systems and helicopters. He maintained that the police response was targeted and proportional, addressing immediate threats.

However, numerous eyewitness accounts and viral videos have called into question the LAPD’s actions, suggesting that officers may have used excessive force against individuals who posed no threat. With a history of costly lawsuits related to protest responses, the LAPD could face additional civil litigation from those claiming excessive force.

A coalition of press rights organizations has already filed a lawsuit, alleging that journalists were shot with less-lethal rounds and detained without cause during the protests. This legal action highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of the media by law enforcement at public demonstrations.

John Burton, an attorney representing injured protesters, criticized the LAPD’s tactics, suggesting that they have not learned from past incidents involving police violence. He referenced the ongoing discussions around police reform following high-profile cases like George Floyd’s, indicating a need for accountability and change in how the LAPD handles protests.
