L.A.-China Flight Diverted and Delayed for Hours After Pilot Forgets Passport

Passengers on United Airlines Flight 198 faced a significant delay after the pilot forgot their passport. The flight, which was scheduled to depart from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Shanghai, China, left at 1:47 PM on Saturday. However, it was diverted to San Francisco International Airport when the airline discovered the pilot did not have the necessary travel documents.

The aircraft landed in San Francisco at 5:05 PM, three hours later than planned. During this time, the airline arranged for a new crew to take over the flight. The new team, consisting of 13 members, was ready by 8:28 PM, and the flight finally took off, landing in Shanghai at 12:48 AM local time on Monday.

United Airlines provided meal vouchers to the passengers and offered some form of compensation for the lengthy delay. Passengers reported receiving $15 meal vouchers and were informed that the diversion was due to "unexpected crew-related issues."

This incident highlights the importance of proper documentation for airline crews. While it is common knowledge that passengers need valid passports for international travel, it seems the same applies to pilots. The airline has not clarified what procedures are in place to check crew documentation before flights, nor what would have happened had the pilot landed in China without a passport.

This situation serves as a reminder of the critical role that thorough preparation plays in air travel, affecting not only the crew but also hundreds of passengers relying on timely arrivals.
