A federal judge has ruled that a planned drag show at Texas A&M University must go on, despite a ban from the university system’s board of regents. Senior U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal issued a preliminary injunction, allowing the event called "Draggieland" to take place as scheduled on March 27, 2025, at the Rudder Theatre.
The Queer Empowerment Council at Texas A&M challenged the board’s decision to prohibit drag shows. In her ruling, Judge Rosenthal stated that the university must allow the performance to occur, emphasizing the importance of free expression.
The drag show has been a beloved event at the university for many years, celebrating queer culture and community. The council expressed their relief and excitement about the ruling, highlighting the event’s significance in promoting joy and unity among students.
The board of regents had decided to ban drag shows, citing concerns that such events might be seen as promoting gender ideology, in line with directives from state officials, including Governor Greg Abbott. The resolution stated that hosting drag shows could violate federal funding regulations related to the promotion of gender ideology.
While Texas A&M University officials stated they could not comment on ongoing litigation, they acknowledged the judge’s ruling and are considering their next steps. The Queer Empowerment Council had previously voiced their commitment to fighting for the right to hold events like Draggieland, which they believe are vital for fostering an inclusive environment on campus.
The controversy surrounding the ban reflects broader national debates about LGBTQ+ rights and the role of educational institutions in supporting diverse forms of expression. The upcoming performance is expected to draw significant attention and support from the community.
