Jacqueline Bisset Critiques #MeToo Movement: "Women Must Also Act Appropriately"

British actress Jacqueline Bisset has sparked controversy with her recent comments regarding the #MeToo movement, suggesting that women share some responsibility for preventing sexual harassment. In an interview with the New York Post’s Page Six, Bisset, who celebrated her 80th birthday last year, expressed her views on the movement that gained momentum following the Harvey Weinstein scandal in 2017.

Bisset emphasized the importance of personal accountability, stating, “I understand as an idea, it’s important that men behave, but I do really think it’s important that women behave, too.” She stressed that women should be mindful of how they dress and the messages they convey, calling it “very dangerous” to disregard these factors. Her remarks come in the context of a broader societal conversation about sexual harassment and the dynamics between men and women.

While acknowledging that women might be free from blame if they lack understanding of male behavior, Bisset admitted her lack of sympathy toward many #MeToo stories. “You have to be very careful what you put out [there],” she advised, implying that women must take proactive steps to protect themselves. She also suggested that women should assertively use language to defend themselves, recommending they learn to say "no" firmly.

Reflecting on her own experiences, Bisset, who was a prominent sex symbol in the 1970s and 80s, claimed she never faced sexual harassment, attributing this to her determination to avoid such situations. “I was very determined not to have anything happen to me and I was completely devoted to that idea,” she stated.

The #MeToo movement has led to significant consequences for many powerful figures in Hollywood, with numerous men facing accusations that have resulted in career fallout. However, it has also faced criticism and backlash, particularly regarding accusations against certain political figures. The Time’s Up organization, created by Hollywood celebrities to combat workplace harassment, has also encountered scrutiny for allegedly protecting some powerful Democrats from allegations.

Bisset’s comments add to the ongoing debate about the dynamics of gender, power, and responsibility in the context of sexual harassment, reigniting discussions about the roles both men and women play in these situations.
