Israel Claims Strike on Tehrans Evin Prison and Fordo Access Routes

Israel has launched a significant military strike on Tehran’s infamous Evin prison, causing damage to the facility that houses many political prisoners. This attack, reported by Iran’s judiciary, is said to have violated international law. The situation was described as "under control," but footage from state TV showed first responders tending to casualties and searching through rubble.

Israel’s Defense Minister stated that the military targeted "regime targets and agencies of government repression" in Tehran, including Evin prison. France’s foreign minister condemned the strike, emphasizing the risk it posed to two French citizens imprisoned there.

The Israeli military also targeted access routes to the Fordo uranium enrichment plant, located south of Tehran. This action followed a recent U.S. airstrike that reportedly used "bunker-busting" bombs on the facility. In retaliation, Iranian ballistic missiles hit various locations in Israel, including an industrial area near Ashdod.

In the past ten days, Israel has intensified its air campaign against Iran, citing the need to address what it calls "existential threats" posed by Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. According to Iran’s health ministry, Israeli strikes have resulted in around 500 deaths, while a human rights group estimates the toll at 950. In contrast, Israeli authorities report that 24 people have died from Iranian missile strikes.

Evin prison is known for holding thousands of detainees, including dissidents, human rights activists, journalists, and dual nationals. Residents nearby reported a powerful explosion that shattered windows in their homes. Videos showed damaged vehicles and debris, with significant destruction also noted at the Shahid Moghaddas Prosecutor’s Office located within the prison complex.

While precise casualty figures remain unclear, there are concerns about the welfare of civilians and inmates alike. Reports indicate that some prisoners experienced panic and injuries from the shockwave of the explosion. Amnesty International expressed deep concern over the attack, stating that deliberately targeting civilian sites is prohibited under international humanitarian law.

Former inmate Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe shared her distress about the bombing, recalling her time in Evin and the friendships she formed there. She expressed worry for those still imprisoned, fearing for their safety and mental state following such a traumatic event.

Israeli officials claimed the attacks were aimed at critical sites linked to Iran’s military and security infrastructure. This includes the headquarters of the Basij Resistance Force, known for suppressing dissent, and the internal security headquarters of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps.

As tensions escalate, the international community watches closely. Iran has accused the U.S. of disrespecting international law following the airstrikes, while calls for accountability regarding Iran’s nuclear stockpile continue. The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for regional stability and international relations.
