Introducing Sunny and Gizmo: Big Bears Newest Bald Eagle Residents

Friends of Big Bear Valley recently announced the names of two new bald eagle eaglets: Sunny and Gizmo. These eaglets hatched in early March and are the offspring of the well-known bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow.

The naming process was quite a spectacle, attracting over 54,000 entries. After narrowing the options down to 30 names, students from Bear Elementary School participated in voting to select the final names. The nonprofit group shared the results on Facebook, expressing excitement about the chosen names. They noted that the larger eaglet is named Sunny, while the smaller one is named Gizmo.

This year’s eagle nesting season has been particularly eventful. Although two eaglets survived, a third eaglet did not make it through a recent snowstorm. Friends of Big Bear Valley named the third chick Misty in honor of Kathi Misterly, a dedicated volunteer who passed away from cancer.

The eaglets have captured the attention of many nature enthusiasts, with a live webcam set up to monitor their nest, located high in a Jeffrey pine overlooking Big Bear Lake. As the eaglets grow, they will continue to be a source of inspiration and fascination for the community.
