Tense confrontations unfolded in Downtown Los Angeles on Friday as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out immigration sweeps, prompting protests from local activists. The scene was chaotic, with protesters trying to block ICE agents from detaining individuals believed to be in the country illegally.
Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when ICE agents escorted handcuffed individuals into waiting vans. Protesters shouted and waved their arms, with one person even throwing eggs at the vehicles. A man could be heard warning others in Spanish about the impending raids, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
One of the raids took place in the Garment District, where ICE agents in riot gear detained workers at a clothing store. As agents made arrests, a crowd gathered outside, recording the events on their phones and shouting at the agents. Activists stood on a truck, using megaphones to remind the detained workers of their rights and urging them not to speak to the federal agents. They also requested that lawyers be allowed access to the workers and sometimes called out specific names.
The Service Employees International Union reported that its California president, David Huerta, was detained and injured while observing the operation. The union demanded his immediate release, emphasizing the right to document law enforcement activities.
Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations, explained that the federal agents were executing warrants for individuals illegally residing in the U.S. This operation drew sharp criticism from Los Angeles officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, who described the raids as creating fear in the community and disrupting public safety.
Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez urged residents to remain vigilant, noting that the raids often happen quickly and without warning. Mayor Bass echoed these sentiments, stating that the city would not tolerate actions that instill terror in its communities.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell clarified that the LAPD had no involvement in the immigration enforcement operations, stating that his department would not assist in mass deportations and aims to ensure safety for all residents, regardless of immigration status.
As tensions escalated, LAPD officers in riot gear arrived to assist federal agents who felt overwhelmed by the crowd. An order to disperse was given, signaling a further intensification of the situation.
