Idaho Court Broadens Medical Exceptions for Abortion Ban

Idaho’s attorney general, Raúl Labrador, recently responded to a court ruling regarding the state’s abortion laws. He stated that Idaho law does not require doctors to wait until a woman’s death is certain before performing an abortion. While he disagrees with some parts of the ruling, he believes it supports his office’s position that Idaho’s abortion laws are constitutional and protect both unborn children and their mothers.

The ruling came from a lawsuit filed in September 2023 by the Center for Reproductive Rights. They represented four women who claimed they had to leave Idaho to get abortions due to serious health risks or nonviable pregnancies. The lawsuit also included Dr. Corrigan and another physician, along with a family physicians’ organization.

As of now, it is not clear if Labrador’s office plans to appeal the decision. The case highlights ongoing debates about abortion access and medical practices in Idaho, reflecting broader national discussions on reproductive rights.
