Hundreds Participate in Gazas Largest Anti-Hamas Protest Since the Outbreak of War

Protests erupted in northern Gaza recently, as many residents expressed their anger and frustration towards Hamas, the ruling party in the region. This demonstration followed a series of rocket attacks by Islamic Jihad gunmen on Israel, which led to an Israeli military response. Israel decided to evacuate parts of Beit Lahia, stirring public outrage among the local population.

The protests come after a nearly two-month ceasefire, which ended when Israel resumed its military operations in Gaza. The Israeli government blames Hamas for rejecting a new proposal from the United States to extend the truce. In response, Hamas claims that Israel has strayed from the original agreement made earlier this year.

Since the military actions resumed on March 18, hundreds of Palestinians have lost their lives, and many more have been displaced. The situation has become dire, with families like that of Mohammed Diab feeling the impact deeply. Diab, a resident of Beit Lahia, lost his home and his brother in an airstrike last year. He voiced his frustration during the protests, stating, "We refuse to die for anyone, for any party’s agenda or the interests of foreign states." He called for Hamas to listen to the voices of the grieving families affected by the ongoing conflict.

Protesters were seen chanting against Hamas and its connection to the Muslim Brotherhood, highlighting a growing wave of criticism directed at the group. Since the war began, open dissent against Hamas has been more visible, both in public demonstrations and online. Yet, despite this unrest, there remains a loyal base of supporters for the group, making it difficult to determine the overall shift in public opinion.

Hamas has been in power in Gaza since 2007, following a victory in elections a year earlier and a subsequent violent takeover of rival factions. The current protests reflect a significant moment in Gaza’s ongoing struggle, as many residents call for change in leadership amidst the devastation of war.
