Humanoids Compete Against Humans in Historic Half-Marathon Showdown

In a groundbreaking event, humanoid robots took part in a half-marathon alongside human runners in Beijing, China, on April 19, 2025. This unique competition marked a significant milestone in robotics, showcasing the advancements in humanoid technology.

The race featured 21 robots from 20 teams, covering a distance of 21.1 kilometers. While 12,000 human runners followed standard race protocols, the robots operated under special rules that allowed for battery swaps and substitutions. Each time a robot was replaced, a 10-minute penalty was added to its finish time.

Despite the excitement, the robots faced challenges during the race. Many stumbled and fell, requiring assistance from human operators. One robot even crashed into a railing shortly after starting, causing its human handler to topple over as well. The spectacle drew attention, with spectators capturing videos of the robots’ struggles and successes.

The standout performer was the Tien Kung Ultra robot, which completed the course in two hours and 40 minutes. This time, while significantly slower than the winning human runner who finished in just over an hour, was an improvement from its previous attempt that took eight hours. Tang Jian, the chief technology officer for the robotics team, credited the robot’s long legs and advanced algorithms for its performance, which mimicked human running techniques.

Awards were given for various categories, including best endurance and most innovative design. Many spectators shared their experiences on social media, highlighting the blend of technology and sport.

This event not only showcased the capabilities of humanoid robots but also sparked discussions about the future of robotics in athletic competitions. As technology continues to evolve, the integration of robots into traditional sports may become more common, raising questions about the role of machines in human activities.
