Belgian authorities are investigating a corruption scandal involving alleged bribery linked to the European Parliament. The investigation focuses on lobbyists reportedly working for Huawei, who are accused of trying to influence current and former Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to support the company’s trade agenda.
According to the prosecutor’s office, corruption has been occurring since 2021, disguised as commercial lobbying. This has included offering compensation for political positions, lavish gifts like food and travel, and invitations to high-profile events, such as football matches.
In a significant move, Belgian police conducted 21 raids across Brussels, Flanders, and Wallonia. They sealed off two offices within the European Parliament as part of the investigation. However, a spokesperson clarified that no MEPs were directly targeted during these raids.
