The beloved tigress known as Arrowhead, who captured the hearts of many wildlife enthusiasts, has passed away at the age of 11. Her death occurred in Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, where she had spent her life ruling over a territory rich with lakes and wildlife. The news of her passing has left a deep sense of loss among photographers, tour guides, and nature lovers who admired her strength and beauty.
Arrowhead, also referred to as T-84, was a remarkable predator, known for her unique ability to hunt crocodiles. Indian wildlife photographer Sachin Rai had been documenting her life since she was a cub, and he recalls witnessing her fierce hunting skills. Just days before her death, she managed to kill a crocodile, showcasing her enduring spirit even as her health declined.
The tigress was part of a distinguished lineage, being the daughter of Krishna and the granddaughter of Machli, both of whom were legendary figures in the park. Machli, in particular, was famous for her prowess in hunting crocodiles, a skill that Arrowhead inherited. Her lineage contributed to her iconic status among visitors and wildlife watchers.
Sadly, Arrowhead’s life was not without challenges. She faced difficulties, including being pushed out of her territory by her own daughter, Riddhi. This forced her to mate multiple times to find a new home. Despite these struggles, she gave birth to four litters during her lifetime, though not all her cubs survived.
In her later years, Arrowhead’s health deteriorated due to a tumor, which made it hard for her to hunt. Park officials had to intervene and provide food for her, but this support stopped after some of her cubs became involved in attacks on humans. As she grew weaker, she was often seen struggling to walk, a heartbreaking sight for those who had admired her strength.
In her final days, Arrowhead returned to her former territory, now ruled by Riddhi. Remarkably, Riddhi allowed her mother to rest without confrontation, a poignant moment that highlighted the bond between them.
Arrowhead’s legacy as a powerful and majestic creature will not be forgotten. Her story reminds us of the beauty and challenges of wildlife in India, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who visit Ranthambore National Park.
