Homeless Man Killed in Venice Beach After Allegedly Stepping In During Couples Dispute

A tragic incident unfolded in Venice Beach on Wednesday night when a homeless man was fatally shot after trying to intervene in a couple’s argument. The Los Angeles Police Department received reports of the shooting around 10:20 p.m. at the Westminster Dog Park. Upon arrival, officers discovered 28-year-old Zackery Melton dead at the scene.

Witnesses say Melton, who was known in the area and had been living on the streets, attempted to help a woman involved in the dispute. Cheyene, Melton’s girlfriend, described him as a protector who would stand up for others. She expressed her heartbreak over his death, stating, “He got shot defending a homegirl.”

Following the shooting, the gunman fled into a nearby building, prompting a swift response from police, who surrounded the area. Despite their efforts, the shooter was not located. The search for the suspect continues, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

In the aftermath of the shooting, a makeshift memorial for Melton began to take shape at the park, with flowers laid out where the incident occurred. Residents, including Kristen Schonert, who often visited the dog park, shared their sorrow and emphasized the need to remember Melton as a person, not just as a victim of homelessness. “People are going to see the homelessness of it all and not the human side of it,” she remarked.

The community is mourning the loss of Melton, a man who tried to help others in need, highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding homelessness and safety in urban areas.
