Hikers Discover Hoard of Gold Coins and Treasures in Czech Forest

A group of hikers in the Czech Republic made an astonishing discovery while exploring the Podkrkonosí Mountains. Earlier this year, they stumbled upon a hidden stash of antique gold and other valuable items worth nearly half a million dollars.

The hikers found the treasure inside a small aluminum can and an iron box, which were tucked away and covered in dirt. When they opened the containers, they were amazed by what they saw. Miroslav Novak, the head of archaeology at the Museum of East Bohemia, expressed his shock during an interview, saying, “When he opened it, my jaw dropped.”

Inside the containers, the hikers uncovered an impressive collection: 598 gold coins wrapped in black fabric, ten metal bracelets, 16 metal snuff boxes, a comb, a chain, a wire bag, and a powder compact. The coins alone are valued at around 7.5 million Czech crowns, approximately C$470,000.

Novak noted that the coins date back to between 1808 and the early 19th century, suggesting they had been buried for over a century. He speculated that the treasure might have been hidden during the tumultuous times of Nazi Germany’s annexation of the region in the 1930s or possibly by Nazis themselves toward the end of World War II.

Coin expert Vojtěch Brádle examined the coins and found that many originated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was ruled by Franz Joseph I. Some coins were traced back to Serbia in the 1920s and 1930s, while others came from various countries including Turkey, Romania, Italy, Russia, France, and Belgium.

The historical significance of the treasure is immense, and the items are currently being researched, cataloged, and preserved. As for the hikers, Czech law entitles them to a finder’s fee of up to 10 percent of the treasure’s total value, rewarding them for their unexpected adventure in the woods.
