High School Football Players Gain Insight While Assisting Veterans

The Calallen Wildcats football team is not just focused on their upcoming game against Boerne this Friday; they are also making a significant impact in their community through a charitable initiative called "Heaters for Heroes." This project, which began just a week ago, aims to provide space heaters to veterans in need, demonstrating the players’ commitment to serving those who have served the nation.

The initiative was inspired by a conversation David Salinas Jr., a member of the United Veterans Burial Association, had with a veteran who was struggling with a broken heater. Recognizing the urgent need, Salinas Jr. brought the idea to his son, David Salinas III, a junior quarterback and outside linebacker for the Wildcats, and his son’s friend, Skyler Rubio, a senior wide receiver and safety. Together, they mobilized their teammates to collect space heaters for veterans.

“It helps me know that I’m invested in the community,” said Salinas III, emphasizing the importance of contributing to causes beyond football. Rubio echoed this sentiment, stating, “Just trying to help the veterans that do so much for us, so why not do a little for them during the holidays?”

So far, the players have successfully donated 15 space heaters to veterans, providing much-needed warmth during the chilly winter months. Samuel Juarez, the secretary and Chaplain of the United Veterans Burial Association, noted that the donations have been met with gratitude, highlighting the positive impact of the players’ efforts. “They really appreciate someone taking time out of their day just to make sure they’re doing OK,” Juarez said.

The initiative is not limited to just a few players; it has inspired involvement across the team, with even freshmen like Drayson Gamez participating by donating heaters. Salinas Jr. remarked on the impressive engagement from the players, stating that the effort has spread from seniors to juniors and now to younger teammates. He hopes this experience will teach the players about the importance of helping others in their community.

Rubio added, “Helping them out helps me feel good,” underscoring the personal fulfillment that comes from supporting veterans. The team plans to continue the fundraiser as long as there is a need, with intentions to switch focus to providing fans for veterans as the weather warms.

As the Wildcats prepare for their regional finals against Boerne in San Antonio, their commitment to community service stands out, reminding everyone that the spirit of giving is just as important as the game itself.
