The government of Greenland has made it clear that it did not invite a U.S. delegation led by Usha Vance to visit the island, despite claims from former President Donald Trump that such an invitation was extended. Vance, the wife of Vice-President JD Vance, is scheduled to arrive in Greenland on Thursday with one of their children, along with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
This visit comes amid ongoing tensions regarding Trump’s interest in Greenland, which he has suggested should fall under U.S. control. Greenland’s leaders have pushed back against these assertions, emphasizing their desire for autonomy. While Greenland is technically a Danish territory, it has its own parliament and operates independently in many respects. The Danish government oversees its foreign affairs and provides financial support.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen voiced her concerns about the U.S. delegation’s visit, calling it "unacceptable pressure" on both Greenland and Denmark. She stated that this pressure would be resisted. Shortly after Trump’s comments, Greenland’s government issued a statement on Facebook, confirming that no invitations for visits had been made and requesting respect for its current political situation, as it is in the process of forming a new government.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede described the upcoming visit as "very aggressive" and expressed that the pressure from the U.S. has reached critical levels. He urged the international community to respond, noting that previous attempts at dialogue have not been effective.
In a recent Instagram video, Usha Vance expressed her excitement about experiencing Greenland’s culture, particularly during its national dog sled race, which the U.S. is sponsoring. She mentioned her anticipation of visiting an American military base while acknowledging that the land remains Greenland’s sovereign territory.
JD Vance confirmed on social media that he would accompany his wife on the trip, stating he didn’t want her to have all the fun alone. Additionally, a protest has been planned for Vance’s arrival in Sisimiut, reflecting the discontent among some Greenlanders regarding U.S. involvement in their affairs.
Greenland is rich in mineral resources and holds strategic importance in global geopolitics, making it a focal point of interest for various nations. The unfolding events highlight the delicate balance between local governance and international pressure, as Greenland navigates its path forward amidst external influences.
