Authorities in Germany and Italy have made significant arrests in a crackdown on the ‘Ndrangheta, one of the most powerful crime organizations in Italy. This operation focused on a fraud scheme involving the sale of high-end food products and pizza-making equipment.
In total, dozens of suspects were taken into custody, including a police officer accused of aiding the criminal group. The raids, which took place across four German states and various locations in Italy, were part of a lengthy five-year investigation. This effort was supported by Interpol, highlighting the international cooperation needed to tackle organized crime.
German police reported that 14 suspects were arrested in western Germany, while 20 were detained in Italy. These individuals are linked to a sophisticated fraud operation that targeted Italian companies by posing as representatives of German food businesses. They ordered large quantities of expensive items, such as gourmet cheeses and olive oil, as well as pizza-making equipment, but never paid for them. This scheme resulted in substantial losses for the suppliers, amounting to hundreds of thousands of euros.
The suspects also allegedly pressured Italian restaurants in the Stuttgart area to purchase these supplies, using intimidation tactics to ensure compliance. Many of the victims were from Calabria, the region in Italy where the ‘Ndrangheta is based.
In addition to fraud, the suspects face charges related to arson, drug trafficking, and tax evasion. The arrested police officer is accused of leaking confidential information to assist the criminal organization, further complicating the case.
This operation underscores the ongoing fight against organized crime in Europe and the importance of cross-border collaboration among law enforcement agencies.
