Gene Hackmans Heartfelt Letters to His Lovely Girl During Their Alzheimers Journey

New Mexico authorities have released new records related to the investigation into the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. These documents include a collection of heartfelt letters exchanged between the couple, showcasing their deep bond even as Hackman faced health challenges due to Alzheimer’s disease.

The letters, which range from humorous to poignant, provide a glimpse into their life together before they were found dead in their Santa Fe home in February. Hackman, who is now 95, affectionately referred to Arakawa, 65, as “Lovely girl” in his notes, often signing them off with “Love G.”

In one letter, Hackman humorously addressed his declining memory, writing about a trip to a building where he hoped to remember what he needed to do. He ended the note with “love what’s his name.” Another letter contained a playful poem about a medical visit, expressing his resilience despite the challenges he faced.

The couple had been married for 33 years, and Arakawa served as Hackman’s primary caregiver during his later years. The letters also revealed her meticulous notes on his medication schedules and medical appointments, highlighting the care she provided.

Arakawa passed away around February 11 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a serious illness caused by a virus spread by rodents. Investigators found evidence of rodent activity on their property, although no signs were present in the main house. Hackman died shortly after, likely unaware of his wife’s passing due to the advanced stage of his Alzheimer’s.

Authorities believe Hackman may have wandered their home for several days without realizing Arakawa had died. The couple’s dog, Zinna, was found dead in a crate, having suffered from dehydration and starvation, while their other two dogs were found alive.

The recent release of documents included photographs of the letters and other evidence collected during the investigation. A New Mexico judge had previously blocked the release of certain records at the request of Hackman’s estate. However, a ruling in March allowed for the release of documents that did not show the couple’s bodies.

These letters paint a vivid picture of a couple who faced life’s challenges together, sharing moments of love and humor even in difficult times.
