Four sheriff’s deputies were attacked by inmates at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles on Sunday, leading to serious injuries and hospital treatment for the officers. The incident occurred shortly after noon when one deputy was escorting a group of inmates from the 2500 housing area to another part of the jail.
According to officials, the deputy was trying to separate one inmate when he was suddenly surrounded by multiple assailants. They punched him and stomped on his head until he lost consciousness. Reports indicate that he suffered a stab wound to the head that required staples to close.
Three other deputies rushed to help their colleague but were injured during the struggle. All four deputies were taken to a hospital for treatment and were later released. The inmates involved were also evaluated medically and remain in custody.
What makes this incident particularly concerning is that surveillance cameras in the jail were turned off for maintenance at the time of the attack. This has raised questions about security and oversight within the facility. The Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the cameras were back in operation by late Monday.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Department condemned the assault, calling it "absolutely unacceptable." They promised swift action to hold those responsible accountable, emphasizing that their deputies work under challenging conditions to maintain safety in the jail.
The attack has drawn attention to the ongoing issues of violence within Men’s Central Jail, which has a history of both inmate and staff violence. Recent reports have highlighted a pattern of unchecked aggression, with videos showing inmates attacking each other and jail staff. This latest incident has prompted the Homicide Bureau to investigate, as is standard procedure whenever a deputy is injured severely enough to require hospitalization.
The Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, the union representing the deputies, expressed outrage over the attack. They pointed out the need for immediate action to address safety concerns within the jail system, which is the largest in the world.
Officials recovered a five-inch shank believed to have been used in the attack, allegedly hidden in an inmate’s clothing. The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the assault and the conditions that allowed it to happen.
