Four deputies at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles were injured during a violent attack by inmates on Sunday. The incident occurred just after noon when a deputy was escorting a group of inmates to another area of the facility. As he attempted to separate one inmate, he was suddenly surrounded by multiple attackers. They punched him and stomped on his head until he lost consciousness.
The attack escalated when one of the inmates used a shank, stabbing the deputy in the head. He suffered a one-inch puncture wound that required staples to close. Three other deputies rushed to help him but were injured in the process. All four deputies were taken to a hospital for treatment and were later released.
What makes this situation even more troubling is that there is no video footage of the assault. Hundreds of surveillance cameras in the jail were shut off for maintenance that morning, leaving officials without a record of the event. The Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the cameras were back in operation by late Monday.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Department condemned the attack, emphasizing that it is unacceptable and promising to hold those responsible accountable. The department noted that its employees face challenging conditions while working to maintain safety in the facility.
After the attack, officials found a five-inch shank hidden in one of the inmate’s boxer shorts. The Homicide Bureau is investigating the incident due to the severity of the injuries sustained by the deputies. Under department policy, any serious injury to an on-duty deputy triggers a homicide investigation.
The union representing the deputies expressed outrage over the attack, highlighting ongoing safety concerns within the jail. They pointed out that this incident reflects a larger issue of neglect in the facilities, suggesting that inmates are able to manipulate security measures, such as opening doors.
Men’s Central Jail has a history of violence, both from inmates and staff. Previous reports have documented a pattern of unchecked violence, with surveillance footage showing inmates attacking each other and staff. This latest incident raises serious questions about safety and security in one of the largest jail systems in the world.
