Four Dead in Large-Scale Russian Drone Assault on Dnipro, Ukraine Reports

Air sirens were heard in several regions of Ukraine overnight, including the capital, Kyiv. It is still unclear if there were any casualties from these alerts. In response, the Russian defense ministry reported that three Ukrainian drones were intercepted or shot down over the Belgorod region, which is located in western Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation late on Friday, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. He pointed out that this action goes against a temporary agreement reached earlier this month during talks that involved the United States. Meanwhile, Russia has consistently blamed Ukraine for attacks on its own energy facilities.

Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a controversial suggestion that Ukraine should be placed under UN control to establish what he called a more "competent" government. This proposal has been met with strong disapproval from Ukraine’s allies, who see it as an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government. Ukraine responded by calling Putin’s ideas "crazy," suggesting they are merely delaying progress toward a ceasefire deal that US President Donald Trump is advocating for.

On Tuesday, Washington announced that both Ukraine and Russia had agreed to a limited truce in the Black Sea. However, Russia later presented a list of conditions, including the lifting of some Western sanctions, raising concerns that they might be trying to stall any ceasefire efforts.

In a separate development, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed that France and the UK are proposing a reassurance force to support Ukraine. This proposal was discussed at a summit in Paris with a coalition of over 30 countries that support Ukraine. However, Russia has warned that any European troops deployed in Ukraine would be viewed as legitimate targets.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Russia has managed to control about 20% of Ukrainian territory. The ongoing conflict continues to raise tensions in the region and beyond.
