Former Military Leader of Guinea Granted Pardon for Stadium Massacre

Former Guinean military leader Moussa Camara has received a pardon after being convicted for his role in a violent crackdown on protesters in 2009. Camara, who was an army captain at the time, led a coup that resulted in the deaths and injuries of many civilians. His conviction, along with that of seven other military commanders, came in July 2024 after a lengthy trial lasting nearly two years.

The pardon follows a recent announcement from the current military government, which plans to compensate victims of the massacre. The court had ordered Camara and his co-defendants to pay for the damages, which include significant amounts for various forms of suffering. According to reports, victims of rape could receive $173,000 each, while those affected by deaths or disappearances might get $115,500. Compensation for looting is set at $57,000, and victims of torture could receive $23,000.

The tragic events occurred in September 2009 when thousands gathered at a stadium in Conakry to urge Camara not to run for president. The situation escalated as security forces intervened, leading to chaos. Many were shot, beaten, or injured in the ensuing stampede, and at least 109 women were reported to have been raped during the violence.

Details about Camara’s health remain unclear, but his brother expressed relief and gratitude for the pardon, indicating that the family is pleased with the outcome. After being shot in the head, Camara fled Guinea and spent years in exile, first in Morocco and then in Burkina Faso.

Camara’s deputy, who took over after the coup, organized elections in 2010 that led to a period of civilian rule. This era saw Alpha Condé become president, but Condé was later overthrown in another coup in September 2021, following public unrest over his controversial third term. The political landscape in Guinea continues to evolve, with Camara’s pardon marking a significant moment in the country’s ongoing journey towards justice and reconciliation.
