Fontana Man Shot Dead by Police After Answering Door Following 911 Call, Authorities Claim He Was Armed

Fontana police officers shot and killed a man early Sunday morning after he allegedly pointed a gun at them. The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. in an apartment located in the 9100 block of Date Street.

The police were responding to a 911 call reporting domestic violence when they arrived at the scene. Upon opening the door, they encountered Kevin Reyes Portillo, 31, who was said to have brandished a firearm. Officers treated him at the location before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Fontana Police Officer Steve Reed did not provide details on how many officers were involved in the response or how many shots were fired during the encounter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation and has not commented further on the incident.

This shooting follows increased scrutiny of the Fontana Police Department, which has faced criticism after a previous incident involving the death of an unarmed man, Jaime Valdez, in 2023. The department has also settled lawsuits related to alleged misconduct in the past.

As the investigation continues, community members and advocates are likely to keep a close eye on the outcomes and any potential implications for police practices in the area.
