Five Skiers Discovered Deceased in Swiss Alps Close to Luxury Resort

On May 25, the bodies of five skiers were discovered on a glacier near the Swiss resort town of Zermatt. The grim finding came after two hikers reported seeing abandoned skis close to the Rimpfischhorn peak, which rises to 4,000 meters in the Valais Alps.

Authorities quickly dispatched an Air Zermatt aircraft, featuring an emergency doctor, a paramedic, and specialists from the Valais Cantonal Rescue Organization, to search the area. Following aerial and ground searches, the Valais cantonal police confirmed that the bodies were located on the Adler Glacier. Three of the skiers were found approximately 500 meters from where the skis were discovered, on an avalanche cone, while the other two bodies were located 200 meters higher.

As of now, the identities of the victims have not been released, and formal identification is still ongoing. Authorities have initiated an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, focusing on weather conditions and avalanche activity in the area.

This incident is not isolated; the Swiss Alps have seen similar tragedies in the past. In March 2024, five cross-country skiers were found dead on a mountaintop in the region. The group of skiers who perished this time were reportedly family members from Valais, who had set out to ski from Zermatt to Arolla, part of the challenging Haute Route alpine trail.

When they began their journey, conditions were described as relatively good. However, the weather deteriorated rapidly. Christian Varone, the commander of Valais regional police, explained that a rescue crew attempted to reach the skiers shortly after 6 p.m., but had to turn back due to extreme winds and cold. A second search effort was halted later that evening due to avalanche risks.

Ultimately, rescuers reached the location of the missing group and found all five individuals with no signs of life. Varone noted that this region is sadly familiar with such tragedies, recalling a 2018 incident where seven hikers lost their lives in similar circumstances.

The Swiss Alps are renowned for their beauty and adventure, but they can also be perilous. As authorities continue to investigate, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of those who venture into these majestic mountains.
