Firefighters Combat Blaze in Pala as Evacuations Begin in Northern San Diego County

Firefighters are currently battling a significant brush fire that broke out in Pala, California, on Friday evening. The blaze, known as the Henderson fire, ignited around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of Henderson Road and Pala Mission Road. In just two hours, it spread rapidly, consuming about 183 acres of land.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) has reported that evacuation orders have been issued for nearby hillside communities, many of which are home to members of the Pala Band of Mission Indians. Additionally, evacuation warnings are in place for areas in Riverside County, just north of the San Diego County line.

A temporary evacuation center has been established at the Pala Casino parking lot to assist those displaced by the fire. Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots described the fire’s location as a challenging area of grass and brush, transitioning into rolling hills and mountainous terrain. This type of landscape can allow fires to spread quickly, particularly uphill.

As of 8:45 p.m. on Friday, the fire was reported to be only 5% contained, with most of the firefighting efforts focused on the eastern flank. The initial response included over 100 firefighters and aerial support to combat the flames.

Road closures are in effect on several routes, including Henderson Road, Pala Mission Road, State Route 76, and Magee Road, as authorities work to manage the situation.

Looking ahead, the weather may complicate firefighting efforts. The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 91 degrees and wind gusts reaching up to 25 mph in the area on Saturday. These conditions could further challenge the containment of the fire, making it crucial for firefighters to act swiftly and effectively.
