"Federal Funding for Research on Trans Menstruation and Support for LGBTQ+ Rights in the Balkans Uncovered in New Database"

In a recent development, the Biden administration has come under fire for its allocation of over $174 million in federal grants aimed at promoting what critics describe as "radical ideas" on gender ideology. This funding, highlighted in a new database called "Funding Insanity," includes controversial projects such as studying menstrual cycles in transgender men and efforts to support LGBTQI+ rights in the Western Balkans.

The American Principles Project, a conservative nonprofit organization, released the database to expose what it claims is a misuse of taxpayer dollars. Terry Schilling, the group’s president, criticized the government for diverting funds from essential services like national defense and infrastructure to promote what he considers a radical gender agenda. He asserted that these expenditures reflect a broader corruption within Washington, D.C.

Among the most notable grants is a $1.9 million allocation to the American Bar Association, aimed at protecting LGBTQI+ individuals in the Western Balkans, a region where gay marriage is largely unrecognized. The funding is part of a broader initiative to enhance human rights and democracy in the area. The American Principles Project argues that such initiatives are emblematic of a shift in priorities under the current administration.

The funds were distributed over the past four years, with the American Bar Association grant starting on October 1, 2024, and set to run for a year. This comes amid significant scrutiny of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which has faced accusations of mismanagement and wasteful spending. Critics, including some Republican lawmakers, have called for a reevaluation of USAID’s operations, suggesting that the agency’s focus has strayed from its core mission.

In addition to the international funding, the Department of Agriculture allocated $600,000 to Southern University A&M in Louisiana for research on menstrual cycles, specifically including transgender and nonbinary individuals. This study aims to address various concerns surrounding menstruation and explore the use of natural materials for hygiene products.

Further examples of spending include nearly $25,000 from the State Department for a Gujarati-language production of "The Vagina Monologues" in India, aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and combating gender-based violence. Moreover, a $1 million grant was provided to a Bangladeshi welfare organization to support gender-diverse individuals.

As this funding comes under the spotlight, the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, is reportedly reviewing federal spending to identify waste and corruption, with a particular focus on USAID. This initiative aligns with former President Donald Trump’s campaign promises to streamline government functions and eliminate perceived inefficiencies.

Democrat lawmakers have reacted strongly against these developments, holding protests and criticizing the Trump administration’s approach to dismantling agencies like USAID. They argue that the focus on cutting funding for social programs undermines essential services and support for marginalized communities.

The controversy surrounding these grants highlights the ongoing debate over government spending priorities and the role of federal agencies in addressing social issues. As the Biden administration continues to face scrutiny over its funding decisions, the implications of these initiatives on public policy and societal values remain a contentious topic.
