A video showing a violent encounter between federal agents and a landscaper in Orange County has sparked outrage online. The man in the video, Narciso Barranco, was detained by immigration officials while he was working outside an IHOP in Santa Ana. His son, Alejandro Barranco, a Marine veteran, described the incident as distressing to witness.
According to Alejandro, his father was approached by several masked agents. In fear, Narciso tried to run away but was quickly subdued. Alejandro claims the agents pepper-sprayed his father, punched him, and dislocated his shoulder during the arrest. After more than 24 hours in detention, Narciso reportedly had not received any medical care, food, or water.
“I don’t think it was just, I don’t think it was fair,” Alejandro said, questioning the need for multiple agents to handle his father, who is described as a 150-pound man. The situation escalated after Alejandro shared the video on social media, leading to widespread condemnation and a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $48,000 for legal expenses.
In response, Tricia McLaughlin, an official from the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed that Barranco was arrested for being an “illegal alien.” She claimed that he had swung a weed whacker at an agent and did not comply with orders. McLaughlin defended the agents’ actions, stating they used the minimum force necessary to ensure safety.
However, Alejandro disputes this account, emphasizing that his father did not pose a threat. He noted that the incident reflects broader issues within the immigration enforcement system, particularly the treatment of undocumented individuals.
Narciso, a 48-year-old landscaper, is well-known in his community for his helpfulness and kindness. On his first call to Alejandro after being detained, he expressed concern about his job and equipment rather than his injuries, underscoring his dedication to his work.
Alejandro and his two brothers, who are also Marines, expressed mixed feelings about the enforcement actions, recognizing the difficult position of their fellow service members who are often just following orders. They hope for change in the immigration system that would address these injustices.
