Experts say Ukraine-U.S. relations strained but not irreparable after tense Oval Office meeting

Less than a week after showing solidarity with fellow Ukrainians on the three-year anniversary of the war with Russia, Anna Tselukhina and her organization are gearing up for another gathering. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is set to host an emergency rally in downtown Calgary in response to the recent meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During the tense exchange in the Oval Office, Trump urged Zelenskyy to strike a deal with Russia to end the war in Ukraine or risk losing U.S. support. Trump and Vance accused Zelenskyy of jeopardizing world peace and demanded more gratitude for U.S. assistance in countering Russia’s aggression.

Expressing disappointment, Ukrainians who sought refuge in Canada due to the war criticized Trump and Vance’s behavior as "disgraceful" and a "shameful attack." Zelenskyy, in Washington to finalize an economic agreement granting the U.S. ownership of rare earth minerals in Ukraine, left without signing a deal.

Despite the heated exchange, the relationship between Kyiv and Washington remains strained but intact, according to Hanna Shelest, a security studies program director. She suggested that Trump and Vance’s actions were deliberate, with Trump possibly aiming for peace while portraying Ukrainians as instigators of conflict.

McGill University professor Maria Popova highlighted the Trump administration’s goal of pressuring Zelenskyy into signing a deal favorable to the U.S., indicating a continued power struggle.

The future of U.S.-Ukraine relations hangs in the balance, with uncertainty over continued U.S. support or a potential shift to Europe. Without U.S. assistance, European countries may struggle to fill the void, raising concerns about the impact on civilian casualties in Ukraine.

As allies prepare to meet in London, support for Ukraine remains strong, with leaders expressing solidarity. Foreign Minister Melanie Joly reiterated Canada’s commitment to Ukraine but refrained from condemning the Oval Office meeting directly.

In the face of escalating tensions, efforts are underway to decipher the motives behind the recent exchange between the U.S. and Ukraine. Shelest emphasized the need to understand hidden agendas and the implications of potential alliances.

In Calgary, Tselukhina remains hopeful for her homeland and loved ones, viewing the current situation as a global test of democracy’s resilience. The world watches as events unfold, waiting to see the outcome of this critical juncture in international relations.
