Elon Musk received a warm send-off from President Donald Trump’s Cabinet as he prepares to leave his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). During a recent Cabinet meeting, Trump praised Musk for his contributions and the significant savings he helped achieve for the U.S. government.
Musk, who has led DOGE since the start of Trump’s administration in January, has been instrumental in identifying and addressing government overspending and mismanagement. Trump expressed his appreciation, saying, “You have been treated unfairly. But the vast majority of people in this country really respect and appreciate you.” The Cabinet applauded Musk as he reflected on his work, claiming that DOGE has saved the country around $160 billion.
Musk highlighted the administration’s achievements in its first 100 days, stating, “This could be the greatest administration since the founding of the country.” He emphasized that the American public voted for secure borders and sensible spending, which he believes the administration has delivered.
Despite the praise, Musk’s time as a special government employee is nearing its end. This role allows him to work in government for a maximum of 130 days within a year, a limit that will be reached on May 30. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles confirmed that while Musk is no longer regularly present at the White House, he continues to work remotely, keeping in touch via phone.
Musk’s role at DOGE was always intended to be temporary. The organization itself is set to dissolve by July 4, 2026, as outlined in Trump’s executive order. Musk’s work has not been without challenges. His involvement has attracted protests against Tesla, with some incidents resulting in damage to vehicles.
As he prepares to return to his main ventures with Tesla and SpaceX, Musk humorously noted during the meeting, “Even my hat has a hat,” referring to the two Trump hats he wore, which elicited laughter from attendees.
Both Musk and Trump have indicated that Musk’s departure from DOGE is imminent, but they also recognize the importance of wrapping up the work he has started. The future of DOGE’s initiatives and Musk’s ongoing contributions to government efficiency remain to be seen as he transitions back to his business pursuits.
