A 26-year-old man from Guatemala, Juan Tiul Xi, has been indicted for allegedly smuggling a 14-year-old girl into the United States. The girl, also from Guatemala, was encouraged by Tiul Xi to enter the country illegally and to claim that she was his sister.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment, stating that Tiul Xi entered the United States unlawfully during 2023, under the Biden administration. He is accused of not only bringing the girl into the country but also of making false statements to the Department of Health and Human Services. Tiul Xi allegedly applied to gain custody of the girl by claiming she was his sister, using a false identity for her.
According to the indictment, after arriving in the U.S., the girl was placed in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Tiul Xi reportedly misled ORR about their relationship, which led to the agency releasing the girl into his custody in early September 2023.
Tiul Xi faces several charges, including encouraging illegal entry for financial gain, making false statements, and aggravated identity theft. U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi criticized the current administration’s border policies, suggesting they have created an environment that allows human trafficking to flourish. She emphasized the commitment to protecting children from such exploitation.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of unaccompanied minors at the border. Reports indicate that incidents of youth sex trafficking have significantly increased during the Biden administration, raising alarms among advocates and officials.
As the situation unfolds, it underscores the complexities of immigration policies and their impact on vulnerable populations, particularly children. The case serves as a reminder of the urgent need for effective measures to protect those at risk.
