A Yankees fan was injured by a falling piece of concrete at Dodger Stadium during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Ricardo Aquino, who traveled from Mexico City, reported that the chunk of concrete struck him in the back while he was seated in the top deck during the third inning. The piece was about the size of a baseball.
Despite the pain, Aquino managed to stay for the rest of the game, which the Dodgers won 8-5. Following the incident, he applied an ice pack to his injury. The next day, Dodger Stadium officials took immediate action by installing concrete netting in the area where the incident occurred in Section 10.
Dodgers spokesperson Ally Salvage stated that professionals were brought in to assess the stadium’s safety. She mentioned that a longer-term review of the facility would also be conducted to ensure the safety of fans.
Dodger Stadium, which opened in 1962, is the oldest Major League Baseball stadium west of the Mississippi River and the third oldest in the country. It underwent a significant renovation before the 2020 season, which included updates to various facilities. However, this incident has raised concerns about the aging infrastructure, similar to issues faced by other historic stadiums like Fenway Park and Wrigley Field.
The recent incident highlights the importance of stadium safety and the need for ongoing maintenance and inspections, especially in older venues. Fans expect a safe environment while enjoying their favorite games, and incidents like this remind everyone of the potential risks involved.
