Recently, US President Donald Trump made a comment that caught many by surprise. He stated that "nobody has ever heard of" Lesotho, a small country in southern Africa. This remark shocked the government of Lesotho, a nation that is known for its stunning mountain landscapes and rich culture.
Lesotho is unique in that it is entirely surrounded by South Africa. This landlocked nation is mostly made up of highlands, with its lowest point still higher than many other countries’ highest points. The country is often referred to as the "Kingdom in the Sky" because of its elevation, which starts at 1,400 meters (about 4,593 feet) above sea level. Many villages in Lesotho can only be reached by horseback or light aircraft, making travel quite challenging.
The people of Lesotho, known as Basotho, share cultural ties with South Africans. They speak Sesotho, which is also one of South Africa’s official languages. However, more people speak it in South Africa than in Lesotho itself. The Basotho are known for their vibrant blankets and traditional conical hats called mokorotlo, which is a national symbol featured on the country’s flag.
Economically, Lesotho faces challenges. Much of its land is unsuitable for farming, leading many of its citizens to seek work in South Africa. Despite these hardships, Lesotho has valuable resources, particularly water, often referred to as "white gold," which it exports to its neighbor. The country also exports diamonds and is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest clothing exporters to the United States, particularly jeans.
Interestingly, Lesotho is home to the highest ski resort in sub-Saharan Africa, called Afriski, located in the Maloti Mountains. This resort attracts skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts from around the world, showcasing the country’s diverse offerings beyond its mountainous terrain.
However, Lesotho also grapples with serious issues. It has one of the highest rates of HIV in the world, with about one in five adults infected. The US government has invested nearly $1 billion in HIV prevention and treatment in the country since 2006. Additionally, Lesotho faces a troubling suicide rate, the highest globally, with 87.5 people per 100,000 taking their own lives each year. Experts suggest that factors like drug abuse, lack of jobs, and insufficient mental health support contribute to this crisis.
Prince Harry has been involved in charitable work in Lesotho since he first visited as a teenager. He co-founded the charity Sentebale with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to support young people affected by HIV/AIDS.
Lesotho may be a small and little-known country, but it possesses a rich cultural heritage, significant challenges, and a unique place in the world. It’s a reminder that every nation, no matter how obscure, has its own story to tell.
