Demonstrators and Aviation Enthusiasts Assemble in Alberta as Leaders Arrive for G7 Summit

Airplane enthusiasts gathered at Calgary International Airport this weekend, eager to catch a glimpse of the aircraft arriving for the G7 leaders’ summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. The excitement was palpable as fans of aviation set up their cameras, hoping to see notable planes, including Air Force One, which carries the U.S. President.

Corbin Johnson, a passionate plane spotter, expressed his enthusiasm while waiting at the airport. He shared that this hobby began during his childhood, when his parents took him to watch planes. “Air Force One is certainly the gold standard,” he said, referring to the aircraft used by the President of the United States. “But I think everyone is excited to see all the other aircraft coming in.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting leaders from the G7, including the U.S., France, the U.K., Germany, Japan, and Italy. They were expected to arrive on Sunday for the three-day summit in the picturesque Rocky Mountains. Leaders from non-member countries, such as Ukraine and India, were also in attendance.

Another aviation enthusiast, Jaidon Phelps, who works as an aspiring pilot at WestJet, got to the viewing area early on Sunday. He noted the thrill of witnessing various aircraft arriving from around the world. “It’s just cool to be part of what’s going on,” he said, highlighting the importance of seeing Air Force One.

The community of plane spotters often shares information about incoming flights, creating a sense of camaraderie among them. Meanwhile, as the leaders arrived, hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Calgary, voicing their concerns. Many held signs with messages directed at President Trump, reflecting a strong anti-Trump sentiment.

The protests were organized in designated zones, with police ensuring that demonstrations remained peaceful. RCMP Chief Supt. David Hall emphasized the importance of allowing people to express their views while maintaining safety. “We police behaviours and not beliefs,” he stated, encouraging lawful and peaceful demonstrations.

Despite the heightened activity at the airport and the protests in the city, regular air traffic continued as usual. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and tension as Calgary prepared to host the international summit.
