Rep. John Larson, a Democratic congressman from Connecticut, experienced a medical episode while delivering a speech on the House floor on Monday. The incident caused him to momentarily freeze during his remarks, leading to concerns about his health. Larson’s office later clarified that he suffered a complex partial seizure, attributed to an adverse reaction to new medication.
During his speech, Larson abruptly halted his delivery, pausing for several seconds before resuming with halting speech and noticeable awkward pauses. This unsettling moment prompted immediate attention from colleagues and staff. Following the episode, Larson was evaluated by the House Attending Physician, Dr. Monahan, who recommended further tests to assess his condition.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Larson explained that the pause in his speech was linked to the seizure. He noted that he had undergone tests that confirmed this diagnosis. "Yesterday, at around noon, I experienced a medical incident on the House floor, when my speech momentarily paused. Following the incident, I saw the House Attending Physician, who referred me for further evaluation," Larson stated.
Larson, who has served in the House of Representatives since 1999, also shared details about his medical history. He underwent a heart valve replacement 15 years ago due to a congenital condition, which can lead to symptoms similar to those he experienced during his speech. The congressman expressed gratitude for the medical care he received and the support from his family, friends, and constituents.
After the incident, Larson participated in several meetings and was reportedly alert and engaged. He reassured his supporters that he would be returning to his congressional duties shortly, stating, "The doctors have prescribed medication that will greatly reduce the chance of this happening again. I will be able to resume an active schedule, including my duties as a Member of Congress, beginning tomorrow."
As a long-serving member of Congress, Larson’s incident raises awareness about the health challenges faced by lawmakers and the importance of prompt medical attention. His experience underscores the need for vigilance regarding health issues, particularly in high-pressure environments like Congress.
