Children Among 14 Killed in Russian Strike on Zelenskys Hometown

A recent attack on Kryvyi Rih has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the city since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The strike occurred on Friday evening, coinciding with ongoing discussions about a potential ceasefire, as U.S. President Donald Trump advocates for peace talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that at least five buildings were damaged in the attack. He emphasized that the violence continues because Russia is not interested in a ceasefire. The regional leader in Kryvyi Rih stated that more than 30 people received medical treatment for their injuries, including a three-month-old baby.

Earlier that same day, drone strikes in Kharkiv, a northeastern city, claimed five more lives, highlighting the ongoing violence across Ukraine. Just days before, Kryvyi Rih had already experienced an attack that left four people dead when a central building was struck.

Military leaders from the UK and France met with Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday to discuss the possibility of deploying foreign peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of a ceasefire agreement. However, the situation remains tense, with little indication that the violence will subside soon.

UK Foreign Minister David Lammy criticized Russia for not moving forward with peace talks, suggesting that the Russian leader could choose to stop the bombardment but instead continues to target civilian areas. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions, indicating that the U.S. would soon determine if Russia was serious about pursuing genuine peace or merely stalling for time.

Kryvyi Rih, located about 40 miles from the front lines in eastern Ukraine, has a population of around 600,000 and is known as one of the longest cities in Europe. As the situation unfolds, the people of Ukraine continue to face the harsh realities of war, with hopes for peace remaining uncertain.
