The chairperson of Sentebale, an African charity co-founded by Prince Harry, has accused him of bullying and harassment in an effort to push her out of her position. Sophie Chandauka made these claims following Harry’s recent resignation from the organization, which aims to support young people living with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana.
Chandauka spoke to Sky News, stating that Harry had unleashed “the Sussex (PR) machine” on her after he announced his departure as a patron of Sentebale. She expressed her frustration, saying she was not informed about his resignation before it was made public, which she believes harmed both her and the charity’s mission.
Chandauka highlighted several incidents that contributed to the tension between her and Harry. She recounted how a fundraiser was nearly derailed when Harry requested to bring a film crew for a Netflix project. This request significantly increased costs and complicated arrangements. Additionally, she described an awkward moment at a polo event where Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, seemingly directed her to step back during a trophy presentation, which drew media attention and scrutiny.
In her statements, Chandauka rejected Harry’s suggestion that she publicly support Meghan, stating that Sentebale should not be seen as an extension of the Sussex family. She also mentioned that she had filed a whistleblower complaint regarding governance issues within the charity, alleging misconduct and a culture of bullying.
The situation escalated when Harry and Prince Seeiso, who co-founded Sentebale with him, resigned from their roles as patrons. They cited a breakdown in relations with Chandauka, who had refused to step down and even sued the charity to retain her position. Both princes expressed their shock and sadness over the events, emphasizing their commitment to the charity’s beneficiaries.
Chandauka claimed that since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020, there has been a noticeable decline in donations. She expressed concern that the "toxicity" of the Sussex brand was putting the charity at risk.
The Charity Commission in the UK has acknowledged concerns regarding Sentebale’s governance and is currently assessing the situation. Meanwhile, the charity released a statement assuring supporters that its work will continue despite the leadership changes.
This unfolding drama highlights the challenges faced by charitable organizations when personal relationships and public personas intersect. As Sentebale navigates this turbulent period, its focus remains on supporting the vulnerable youth it was created to serve.
