The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has announced that the Liberal Party has won the election, with Prime Minister Mark Carney likely to continue leading the country. Supporters of the Liberal Party gathered at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, where Carney is expected to address the crowd following the early results.
As of now, it is still unclear whether the Liberals will secure a majority or minority government. To achieve a majority, a party must win 172 seats in parliament. Current predictions suggest the Liberals could win between 152 and 180 seats, while the Conservatives may secure between 119 and 144 seats.
If the Liberals do not reach a majority, Carney will still govern but may need to negotiate with opposition parties for support. If they fall short by fewer than 20 seats, they might operate as though they have a majority. However, exceeding that number would likely require them to engage in negotiations to effectively govern.
This election marks Carney’s first as Prime Minister. Before entering politics, he had a distinguished career in finance, serving as the head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. He was appointed leader of the Liberal Party in a closed election earlier this year.
His main opponent, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, has been trying to persuade voters that Carney’s policies will mirror those of his unpopular predecessor, Justin Trudeau. Trudeau led the country for a decade before resigning after a controversial meeting with then-President-elect Donald Trump in late 2024.
As the election results come in, the political landscape in Canada is poised for change, with many watching closely to see how the new government will shape the future.
