U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire, which is expected to take effect within 24 hours. This development comes amid heightened tensions in the region following U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
On Sunday, the U.S. issued a “worldwide caution” alert for its citizens, urging them to be careful while traveling abroad. This warning reflects growing concerns over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which has drawn in various international actors.
Canada and the European Union have also expressed their worries about the situation. In a joint statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney and EU leaders called for a negotiated settlement to end the hostilities. They emphasized the need for peace and stability in the Middle East, reiterating their commitment to Israel’s security while urging all parties to adhere to international law.
The statement highlighted the ongoing concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its support for military groups in the region. Canada and the EU are prepared to assist in creating a deal that would impose strict regulations on Iran’s nuclear program, with oversight from the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In response to the worsening conflict, the Canadian government is implementing a “crisis emergency response” in the Middle East. This includes providing 24/7 assistance and consular access for Canadians in the region. The government is also facilitating departure options for Canadians wishing to leave Israel or the West Bank as tensions rise.
Global Affairs Canada has increased its support capacity, deploying a team to assist Canadians across several neighboring countries, including Turkey and Azerbaijan. The agency has also temporarily halted deportations to Israel due to the unstable situation.
Canadians in Iran are being strongly advised to leave the country immediately, as Canada cannot provide consular services there. Since the embassy in Tehran closed in 2012, assistance options are extremely limited. However, support is available for those exiting Iran through neighboring countries.
As the situation develops, Global Affairs Canada continues to work closely with international partners to ensure the safety of Canadians abroad. They are urging citizens to stay informed and register for updates on travel options and safety measures.
