A British man has emerged as the sole survivor of a tragic plane crash in India that claimed the lives of at least 200 people. Vishwashkumar Ramesh was on the Air India flight AI171, which was headed to London Gatwick from Ahmedabad, when it crashed shortly after takeoff.
The Boeing 787-8 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 PM local time. Moments later, it crashed into a building used for doctor accommodations, resulting in a catastrophic explosion. Reports indicate that there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian among the passengers.
Vishwashkumar’s brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, shared that his brother is still in shock and unsure how he survived the crash. He was in seat 11A and managed to escape the wreckage. When he first contacted his family, he was more concerned about his other brother, Ajay, who was also on the flight. Nayan expressed relief at seeing Vishwashkumar doing well, despite his injuries.
Witnesses reported seeing Vishwashkumar walking towards an ambulance, covered in blood and visibly shaken. He was later treated in a hospital and met with Indian interior minister Amit Shah. Family members described his condition as stable, though he has some facial injuries.
The crash has left many families devastated. Among the deceased are three Britons named by the Gloucester Muslim Society: Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa Vorajee, and their daughter Sara. Another couple, Adam and Hasina Taju, were also on the flight, along with their son-in-law. Their granddaughter expressed her disbelief and hope for their safety.
As investigations continue, the cause of the crash remains unknown. The Indian police have confirmed that 204 bodies have been recovered, and 41 individuals are receiving medical treatment for their injuries. The British government is working to provide support to affected families, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy establishing crisis teams in both India and the UK.
In a heartfelt statement, the King expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of those lost. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also acknowledged the tragedy, emphasizing the impact on families who are now facing unimaginable grief.
This incident marks a significant and devastating event, highlighting the fragility of life and the unexpected nature of such disasters. The community is coming together to support those affected, as the world watches and waits for more information.
