"Bipartisan Outrage Grows Over New Jerseys REAL ID Backlog: No Excuse"

As the deadline for obtaining REAL IDs approaches, New Jersey residents are expressing frustration over the difficulty in securing appointments at the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Lawmakers are also voicing their concerns, highlighting the challenges faced by travelers who need these compliant licenses for air travel.

The REAL ID Act, which was signed into law in 2005, requires states to issue driver’s licenses that meet specific security standards. These licenses must have a star in the corner to indicate that the holder has provided additional identification documents. With the deadline looming, many New Jerseyans are struggling to book appointments, leading to long wait times and disappointment.

Assemblymember Nancy Muñoz, a Republican from Union, criticized the MVC for its lack of preparedness. She noted that residents have been trying to secure appointments for months, only to find them fully booked. "There’s no excuse for the Motor Vehicle Commission to be this unprepared," she told Fox News Digital. Many people are waking up early and refreshing their screens, only to see available slots disappear in seconds. Some are even traveling over an hour to find an opening.

New Jersey has been ranked last out of 49 states in a recent CBS News survey regarding the percentage of residents who have obtained REAL IDs. This has raised alarms among lawmakers, especially as the summer travel season approaches. Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald, a Democrat from Cherry Hill, acknowledged the residents’ panic and noted that the deadline has been extended multiple times over the years.

Greenwald pointed out that the current system is outdated, relying solely on in-person appointments, which can be time-consuming and inconvenient. He compared New Jersey’s process unfavorably to neighboring Pennsylvania, which allows online applications for REAL IDs. To address these issues, Greenwald plans to introduce a bill to enable online processing of REAL ID applications in New Jersey.

The MVC has implemented "REAL ID Thursdays," where only REAL ID applications are processed, and staff are working additional hours to accommodate demand. However, despite these efforts, lawmakers believe more should be done to ease the process for residents.

A spokesperson for the MVC stated that they are working diligently to help residents and that they are issuing approximately 23,000 REAL IDs each week. They acknowledged the challenges faced by all states as the deadline nears but emphasized that New Jersey has made REAL IDs available since September 2019.

With travel plans on the horizon, many New Jerseyans are feeling the pressure to secure their REAL IDs before it’s too late. As lawmakers continue to push for changes, the hope is that residents will soon find it easier to obtain the necessary documentation for their upcoming travels.
